VMUG, VDM Challenge, vExpert, oh my ...

What have I been up to lately?

It has been a very busy summer so far. Besides my day job, very busy family life, and volunteer work, I’ve been actively engaged in the virtualization community; however, as a result, my blog posts have suffered. This is not simply an excuse, but an acknowledgement of my own limitations and a big kudos to all those who are able to continue posting regular updates in the #vCommunity despite external obligations. :)

July 22nd - Presented at the Toronto VMUG

Today, I had the privilege of speaking in front of a room full of my peers, talk about community, and engage fellow users. The main topic of my presentation was related to issues that I had encountered while migrating to vCenter and SRM 5.5. The slides from the presentation can be found here.

This was a great experience for me. I really enjoyed the opportunity, and would encourage others to consider trying something like this too. These events are really all about the users, and it would be great to hear from everyone. I hope to do this again.

July 10th - Virtual Design Master Competition

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Virtual Design Master competition yet, I’d encourage you to do so. It engages members of the community to go up against one another in a friendly competition to come up with solutions to hypothetical design challenges.

This is a pretty cool initiative, and one way to push ourselves beyond our traditional comfort zones. Throughout the competition, the participants are presented with a challenge, and then given a few days to work out a solution before defending it live in front a panel of judges.

It is an excellent way of learning, both for the participants, and the viewers in the community. There are lots of ways for everyone to get involved, including live tweeting #VirtualDesignMaster, and reading the design documents that have been created, just to name a few. Disclaimer: these designs are not for use in a production environment, they are for learning purposes only.

I made it through the first round last week. How about this week?

Tune in live on Thursday to find out.

July 10th - Officially welcomed into the 2014 vExpert program!

This was a very special and humbling moment for me, and a big thanks to VMware for running this program. In addition, thanks to all those in the community that have provided positive feedback, because it would be difficult for me to keep up the momentum without some encouragement.

“The annual VMware vExpert title is given to individuals who have significantly contributed to the community of VMware users over the past year. The title is awarded to individuals (not employers) for their commitment to sharing their knowledge and passion for VMware technology above and beyond their job requirements.”

Keep on virtualizing.
